Aaaaand finished!

So, I finally finished Blood and Chocolate :)

I like the book and the movie for different reasons. For instance, I didn't like Book Aiden as much as Movie Aiden - maybe it has something to do with the age difference between the movie characters and the book characters. I'd like to re-watch the movie, because I haven't seen it in a while and I can't remember much of the plot.

Now, to finish I Capture the Castle... the problem is, I saw the movie before finishing the book, so I know how it ends :( But the book is better than the movie, although I liked the movie quite a bit. I was annoyed that they made Cassandra's brother Thomas a lot younger for the movie, though - in the book he's about fifteen, but in the movie he's more like eleven of twelve.

I still have an itch to start a new book, even though I have others to finish. I'm trying to stop myself from starting another book until I finish I Capture the Castle - I only have ninety-ish pages to go, and the font is pretty easy to read.

So those are my latest book adventures. Hopefully by the time I post another book-related blog post, I'll be finished I Capture the Castle!

Reading list, and Oscar predictions

I mentioned in my last post that I set my reading goal on Goodreads to ten books. I tried to compile a reading list the other night, but found that I was close to going over ten books. So, I shall compile a list of ten books that I want to read this year...

On the subject of Oscar predictions, here are mine. I've only seen a couple of the nominated films (Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon), though, so I'm just making educated guesses here.

Best Supporting Actress: I think Melissa Leo's gonna take it. I'd like Helena Bonham-Carter to win, because she's one of my favourite actresses, but it sounds like Leo's performance in The Fighter would totally earn her an Oscar. It would be cool to see Hailee Steinfeld win for True Grit, but I have a feeling that Leo will win it. I am disappointed that Mila Kunis wasn't nominated for Black Swan, though.

Best Supporting Actor: I'm not keen on Christian Bale, but then again, I haven't seen his role in The Fighter. My guess is that either he or Geoffrey Rush will take it.

Best Actor: This is a tough one. I like Colin Firth as an actor, in both comedic and dramatic roles (I saw A Single Man on DVD last year, and thought he was pretty darn good in it), but I've heard that Jesse Eisenberg and James Franco did well in their roles. It would be nice for either of them to win it. And then there's Javier Bardem... okay, I'm totally stuck.

Best Actress: I think Natalie Portman will win this one, although Nicole Kidman could take it for her role in Rabbit Hole.

Best Animated Feature: I haven't seen The Illusionist, but I really want to. I don't think it's being played in my area yet, or if it ever will be - I might have to wait for the DVD. I'd really like How to Train Your Dragon to win, though, because: 1) The script was pretty clever, 2) The animation was pretty good, and 3) Craig Ferguson as a Viking - need I say more? Although The Illusionist looks spectacular, from the trailer I saw. Toy Story 3 earned a Golden Globe for Animated Feature, so it might take the Oscar as well. I really don't know.

Best Original Score: Am I the only one who's annoyed that Alice in Wonderland didn't get nominated for this category? The movie had a really awesome score! Hmm... I think Inception might take it - it got the Golden Globe, and Hans Zimmer wrote it. Zimmer seems to be one of the most popular film score composers. I'm not too familiar with his work - I only just found out via Wikipedia that he did the score for Sherlock Holmes, and I liked that score. I think he'll get the Oscar.

Best Director: It's a three-way tie between Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, David Fincher for The Social Network and the Coen brothers for True Grit. I'm not sure if Tom Hooper will win for The King's Speech, but I'd be happy if he won. It looks like a good film.

And finally...

Best Picture: Wow. I'm really not sure. Shall we say... three-way tie between Black Swan, The Social Network and The King's Speech? Or then there's 127 Hours. And Inception. Oh dear, I do believe I'm stuck.

Big Holiday Post

I might have to save this post and continue it later. We'll see :)

First, I shall start with Christmas Eve.

I got up at 7, so that I could shower and eat breakfast before my dad and I went to buy cannoli for our Christmas Day breakfast. I think I've talked about this before: we buy cannoli and other pastries from our local Italian bakery for Christmas Day breakfast. We also had to go to the grocery store to buy bread and cucumbers for our Boxing Day appetizer get-together - we had my Uncle Brent, Heather, and Heather's daughters over to our house for Boxing Day.

We went to the grocery store first to pick up the bread and cucumbers, and we also picked up a turkey TV dinner as a gag for my sister, who had mentioned that she didn't like pork (we had crown roast of pork for Christmas dinner) and would've preferred turkey ;) Despite the fact that the couple behind us in the check-out were a bit pushy (they complained a little about the line-up, and then pushed past my dad and I as I was trying to head to the exit), I was somewhat cheerful. There was a little kid jabbering away in her mom's shopping cart in the check-out line beside ours', which was really cute :)

After that, we headed to the bakery, but they weren't open yet. Another patron was waiting in his car when we pulled up to find a parking spot, and he laughed when he saw us. We sat in the car for a few minutes, then joined the line-up outside the door. The place got pretty packed when they opened the door; but despite the amount of people, the line progressed pretty quickly. I think it was because a number of people pre-ordered their cannoli. Dad always says he'll pre-order, and never does ;P

The rest of Christmas Eve consisted of cleaning, and wrapping presents. Fortunately, most of the stuff I got for people wasn't too tricky to wrap - it was just my brother's meat tenderizer that was tricky. After watching George Stroumboulopoulos's Christmas special, I went to bed so that my parents could wrap my stuff - and just before they started wrapping, I remembered I had to fill my hot water bottle, so I hurried upstairs to do that :p

And now, Christmas Day!

Christmas morning was very peaceful. After I got up, my dad put the kettle on for coffee and tea, and then we emptied our stockings. Mine was jam-packed with stuff - I can't remember everything that was in it, but I can tell you that it contained a new mug, a bath mitt, a box of Walnut Whips from our local British imports shop, Coronation Street playing cards (I imagine those were from the British imports shop as well), and a 'things to do' paper pad, to list things that are 'not done', 'almost done' and 'so done'. Pretty neat stuff :)

As you can probably tell, I'm very excited about the fifth season of Doctor Who :D I didn't get to watch it on TV, because Space is the only channel in Canada that carries it, and we aren't subscribed to it.

After we opened presents, my mom and I tidied up the spare room for my sister to use while my dad went to pick up Nathan (my brother) and Steph (his girlfriend). We had to hurriedly wrap the knit throw blanket my mom made because she decided to give it to my brother, and we had it wrapped just in time for when they arrived - I literally brought it downstairs and put it under our awesome red tinsel tree as they were taking their shoes off and saying hello to the dogs! :p

From my brother and Steph, I got a bag of assorted candies: two boxes of Pocky (I had asked for Pocky because they know a place that carries the fancier flavours), a box of Lemon Heads, some Necco Candy Buttons, a Chupa Chup, a candy stick that I'm not sure what the flavour is, a mini Cow Tail (a caramel fudge candy), a box of Japanese candies that Nathan wasn't quite sure what they are (they're some kind of strawberry candy, from what the packaging says), and a pouch of Pop Rocks. My parents got similar bags of candy, but instead of the Pocky and the unknown box of Japanese candies they got Malteasers and Peanut Butter Bats. I don't think they got the Candy Buttons, though, or the Lemon Heads.

At around 2:00, we headed to my grandparents' house. My sister was already there, and she gave us her presents to us first. I got a bracelet from Disney World (she had gone to a conference for her pedorthics internship, and the hotel she stayed at was right next to Disney World) and two sweaters from Old Navy - one is a brown and blue argyle cardigan, the other is a black cabled cowl-neck pullover. From my grandparents, I got a set of five pairs of earrings from Avon, a red and black wallet-on-a-string also from Avon and a Chapters Indigo gift card. I don't know how much is on the gift card, though, because Grandpa didn't write the amount on it.

Uncle Brent, Heather, Heather's daughters and their aunt arrived shortly after we did, and we gave Brent and Heather their wedding gift and watched Grandpa open the gift that Brent, Heather and my mom got for him (a new TV for in the kitchen, to replace the one he had), and we left afterwards.

When we got home, Katie opened her stuff from us and we ate dinner: crown roast of pork, mashed potatoes, turnip (which I didn't eat, because I don't like turnip), Brussels' sprouts, dressing, and lamb sausages for Katie. The pork was very yummy. We had trifle for dessert after we'd all digested dinner.

Lastly, Boxing Day.

We did more tidying up before Brent, Heather and the girls came to our house. Brent put on the World Junior Hockey game on and we snacked on cheese and crackers, veggies and pickle dip, chicken liver pate, smoked trout pinwheels, smoked salmon devilled eggs, kielbasa, and Christmas cookies. After the hockey game, Nathan plugged in his Nintendo GameCube, and I watched Nathan, Katie and Heather's daughters play Mario Kart Double Dash - which was highly entertaining.

After Brent, Heather and the girls left, Dad put on Kill Bill: Vol. I on MoviePix. I was pretty happy about this, because I hadn't been able to see all of Vol. I when it premiered on the movie channels, because Mom didn't want me watching past the hospital scene for some reason. I guess she thought the fight scene in the Japanese nightclub was too graphic for me :p Anyway, I absolutely loved it. MoviePix was showing Volumes I and II back-to-back, but I only got to see the first fifteen minutes of Vol. II because it was on really late and Mom wanted everyone to go to bed :p

I can't think of a witty title.

I'm really at a loss as to what to call this post. So... yeah :p

My cat was being a little devil yesterday. She kept sneaking up onto the stove to drink meat juices - I had to chase her away five or six times - and she later puked them up on my carpet. The stain looks like a red wine stain, so it proved troublesome to clean up. It doesn't look as bad as it was when I discovered it - it looked like a crime scene when I started cleaning it up. I half-expected David Caruso from CSI: Miami to be standing there, taking his sunglasses off and putting them back on and commenting on the stain. I got some of the colour up, though, which is good. I may have to ask my parents to buy carpet stain remover, though.

I went to the library yesterday, and picked up some CDs (Cyndi Lauper's Memphis Blues, Sting's Symphonicities and The Who's Tommy) and two DVDs (Jonah Hex and Driving Lessons). I'm kind of excited about both movies, but a bit skeptical about Jonah Hex. I hope it's good.

I got more Christmas shopping done last week. I got some cooling racks for baking for Steph, because she likes baking. I still have to shop for both of my siblings and my mom, though.

Well, that's what's happening lately. I should probably go eat now.

I know, I'm terrible.

I vacuumed up a spider today. It was quite liberating. The spider was huge, too - probably the size of a quarter, at least the size of a nickel, anyway.

Crap, now I have a sharp pain in the back of my head. We must be getting rain this week.

I watched The Breakfast Club today. It was AWESOME :) The DVD I have out of the library has a couple of featurettes, both of which were interesting.

But now I'm feeling melancholy again. It has a bit to do with an upcoming family reunion, and the fact that I can't even bring a book to said reunion (because Mom says it's 'rude'). It's gonna suck: outdoors, in the middle of frickin' July, with a bunch of people who aren't gonna take me seriously. At least my sister's gonna try to come up for this thing, and Justin will probably come with us, so I won't be completely alone. I'll still be bored to death, though.

If I didn't care about how Mom would react, I'd just stay home. But I hate to upset her, so I'll go and try to behave. I really don't want to go. I don't think Dad does, either, because he keeps joking about how he wants to go visit friends elsewhere. I can't say I blame him for wanting to ditch. Neither of us seem to be well received by relatives.

I still don't think it's fair that I can't bring a book. What else am I supposed to do?

Japan lost to Paraguay today. Spain beat Portugal, so the quarter-finals should be interesting...

I watched The Blind Side the other day. I loved it - Sandra Bullock was amazing in it. Next library DVD for me to watch is An Education.

I'm trying to finish Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I'm about a quarter, maybe a third of the way through.

I've been drinking tea again. I stopped for a little while because it was tasting odd to me, but I think I realized why: I was brewing my tea in my mug instead of in a measuring cup. I heat up the water in a plastic measuring cup in the microwave, so sometimes I would just put the tea bag in the measuring cup. Now that I've started doing that again, my tea isn't tasting funny, and my mug isn't too hot to hold.

Also, I'm knitting a dishcloth with some white and pink variegated yarn. It looks so cute! :)

World Cup!

I've been the World Cup, and it's been exciting. Today, New Zealand and Slovakia had a tie game, and so did Portugal and Ivory Coast. And yesterday, Japan won their first game. I was so excited :)

I watched Funny People the other day. It was okay. I thought Sandler was kinda crude in it, but I liked Seth Rogen.

Hmm, what else... I have a DVD and a CD to pick up from the library, and I'm expecting another DVD and CD.

Feeling weird

I feel a little weird. I blame stress.

Aside from that, things are good. I watched the first disc of Mad Men yesterday. It's pretty interesting. I'll probably watch more tomorrow, or I'll watch Whisper of the Heart.

I watched Ponyo Friday night. It was brilliant! The animation was beautiful (especially the underwater scenes), the story was so cute, and Liam Neeson voicing Ponyo's father... I just about melted ;) I can't wait to watch Whisper of the Heart!

I've been working on my Irish Hiking Scarf and my Ravenclaw scarf lately. The Ravenclaw scarf is really wide, but that means it'll be really warm. The Irish Hiking Scarf is coming along great - I'm gonna try to finish it this month, but lately I haven't felt like working on it. I'll probably get it out tomorrow and work on it.

The weather's warmed up

And it's making my head hurt. Not fun.

So, on Monday we have to go to an all-you-can-eat restaurant for Grandpa's birthday. That should be interesting. Patti is organizing it I guess, or Patti and Brent - not sure if he was involved in the planning, but she got him to call my mom because she won't call her. She's so childish.

So, I have to decide what I'm wearing. I'm not dressing to the nines, but I want to make some kind of statement, like a 'Get used to me, 'cause I'm not changing' kind of statement. So I'm thinking jeans and my Led Zeppelin t-shirt ;)

I read a bit of my library book today. Only a couple of pages, but I might read more of it later. I stopped because my head was aching.

Oh yeah, and yesterday I watched the first disc of season one of Heroes, and discovered that disc two is missing. So now I have to take it back to the library, tell them that a disc is missing, and reserve another copy. Joy. At least Ghostbusters is in it's case, though.

Hmm, I think I'll sit upstairs and watch the Hugh Grant double bill on W Network. W has these Hugh Grant double bills on every Saturday this month. Last week it was Bridget Jones' Diary (GREAT movie, although I think it's R-rated) and American Dreamz (which is a really dumb movie; I don't recommend it at ALL...), and the week before that one of the movies was Love Actually. Tonight it's Mickey Blue Eyes (which is really funny, I highly recommend it!) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which I haven't seen yet. If Dad's playing poker tonight, I might watch the double bill downstairs, unless Mom's watching something tonight. I hope Bridget Jones doesn't run into SNL...

Blah, the upstairs satellite receiver has this tendency to show programs as 'info not available' in the guide, so I'll Google W Network's site.

Awesome! Bridget Jones runs until 11:30, which I think is when SNL starts. Maybe I'll make myself a fattening snack and do my nails. And aside from the annoying survey that popped up on the homepage, W Network's site is pretty easy to navigate.

Gawsh, I like Hugh Grant.

Bored...

Such an original title.

I watched The Wrestler last night. It was great, but I wouldn't reccomend it for under-sixteens - or under eightteens, perhaps - because of the sexual content. Definitely check with the parental units first. But I think Mickey Rourke should've gotten the Oscar for that movie. I mean, Sean Penn was great in Milk, but this was Rourke's big comeback. And the song 'The Wrestler' should have at LEAST gotten an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. I think that category was fixed, because there were two songs - count 'em, TWO - from Slumdog Millionaire in that category. And yes, the songs were good, but seriously?! Why wasn't Bruce Springsteen nominated?

Rant over.

In other news, I think I should start jobhunting soon. I'd like a job close to home, although Indigo is very tempting. I'd have to take the bus there, though, until I get my driver's license. I mean, I could get my beginners, but that would mean that Mom would have to come with me to work, and I don't think she'd fancy that. Although, she'd probably be okay with sitting in Starbucks with a pile of knitting or a book. I don't know.

So...

I now know how to turn the HD receiver on. haha. No one really told me until this morning, when Mom got up. I let the dogs out at around 8:30 and thought, hey, I can watch early morning anime! But then I realized that I didn't know how to use the HD receiver, so I waited until Mom got up to turn it on.

The Mighty was just on MoviePix, and Mom says it's coming on at 4:00! I already reserved the DVD from the library, but I might watch it anyway, haha.

I might be able to knit today. I've been taking a few days off, but I might work on my house tie if I'm not too sore. My second washcloth is close to being done, though :D

Swimming in books

I truly am swimming in books.

I had to empty out one of my small bookcases, because we're having someone come over tomorrow as early as 8 AM to install an HD satellie receiver, so my bookcase needed to be moved - meaning I had to take all the books out. The original idea was to put them in a plastic tub, but there were just too many books. Most of the hardcover books went in the plastic tub, and all of the paperbacks were stacked pretty much everywhere. And when Dad moved the bookcase, I saw the source of those ghastly black spiders for myself: a big cobweb with a few spiders about it. UGH. I hope Mom doesn't make me clean it. I never asked to be shunted into the basement in the first place. Dad reckons we'll need to attack that corner with some bleach.

I watched Lost in Austen today, and it was really good - although I've never read any Jane Austen. I want to read Pride & Prejudice, though. Maybe I'll put it on my birthday list for Grandma and Grandpa, because the only copy we have is on cassette.

I also watched a bit of Benny & Joon. I love that movie.

Boredom

Yup. iz bored.

Mom's still being bitchy. But that's normal.

I found the name of a movie that was in my head for a couple of days. It's called The Mighty. It's hard to describe, but it's a great movie. And it has Meatloaf in it!

Dad still hasn't put that network card in my computer, so I'm still using his.

I have two burnt-out lightbulbs in my room. I took one out, and then the second one went and I haven't taken it out yet. I can't put new ones in because we have no more energy-saving bulbs left.

I still have to watch my DVDs from the library.

Howdy, folks

Today's been a day of good and bad stuff. First, the bad.

• I woke up at around 6 or 7 in the morning, because Mouse (who is in heat) and Smiles came down to my room.
• When Mom told me there were pancakes, I wasn't sure what I wanted to eat, and she said something like 'can't say I didn't make an effort'. No comment.
• Mom freaked out after I said "And before you say anything, I didn't deliberately drop it (a piece of pancake) on the floor." She started yelling at me about how her patience is wearing thin, and how she rarely yells at me, and whenever she does I should take a hint. WTF?! How about my feelings?! I've been feeling pretty rotten lately, maybe even depressed, and she bitches me out?!
• Toronto FC lost the soccer match today :(
• Oh, and my mother's probably pissed off because I won't go eat dinner right now because I friggin' filled up on chips during the soccer match, in case she hadn't noticed!!!!!!!!
  

And now, the good:

• Dad left me some chip dip.
• I finally got to see The Blues Brothers. Friggin' sweet.

I have to remember to listen to tonight's episode of Nights with Alice Cooper. I always forget about it.

Oh, and Graham Norton should be on tonight.

And I watched Elvis Costello's talk show last night. It was brilliant.

I should be doing schoolwork

...But instead I'm on Blogger. I'm really weirded out, still. And my eating habits aren't as Hobbit-like as before - I'm not eating as much. In fact, I don't think I ate anything for breakfast, but I had a glass of juice. And I don't think I woke up until 10-ish. I'm starting to feel hungry, though, which is a plus.

So, last night I reserved My Neighbor Totoro and the second InuYasha movie. The InuYasha movie is in transit now, and I probably won't have to wait too long for Totoro either.

In addition to my weird eating habits, I've been really tired, too. Some days I feel like going back to bed and not coming out until dinnertime. I don't know if I'm going to youth group tonight, because Mom and Dad might visit Grandma tonight. Part of me wants to go to youth group, because I'd be getting out of the house, but another part of me feels like staying home and watching movies.

That's all I've felt like doing lately - watching movies. That, and reading, writing and knitting. I haven't done math for two days straight, partly because of headaches.

I did go to the library yesterday, though. Luxury Yarn One-Skein Wonders is pretty good, although I'm not entirely sure what to knit from it. Maybe the 'Berry Jewellery Bag' thing. But that requires reading a lace chart. eep.

I should probably go eat now.

Mmmmmm..... chicken wings....

Yep. We ordered chicken wings again. Five pounds total: two pounds of hot curry, three pounds of honey garlic. As I mentioned before, I love their honey garlic wings. I'll even eat them cold the next day. Seriously. I ate four leftover wings cold, and the other four warmed up. I tried a hot curry one last night, but I can't eat them. Too hot. Nowadays, my stomach hates spicy food, which is really a pity because I love spicy food. I think it depends on what I eat, though. If I have soy milk or something like that with something spicy, it helps cut down on the pain. For instance, some cheese on a bowl of chili. I had a glass of soy milk with that one chicken wing, and it helped.
